PRESQUE ISLE
Described by the locals as “the jewel of northern Michigan” and as the “ Sunrise Shore of Michigan” Presque Isle is a dream for people who enjoy nature in its pristine beauty and who enjoy the spirit of community that bring people together in a way that might not be so readily found anymore in urban location.The county contains 635 square miles, is the state 32nd largest and has the largest lime quarry in the world!
As its names indicate (“Almost an Island” in French), Presque Isle is a peninsula onto the west shore of Lake Huron. The county is proud of its miles of lakeshore and of clean beaches that attract many in the summer to rest, swim or hike.
Pristine streams, inland lakes and unusual sink holes provide nature lovers with many trails andhikes and keep fishermen busy with anticipation. Salmon, Brown Trout and Sturgeon are the three big names here and each hold their own Festival and Tournaments throughout the summer.
Miles of country ski and snowbiles trails keep everyone in shape in winter and enjoying the outdoors.Ocqueoc falls are spectacular in spring time after the big snow melt and in the fall after the rain falls.
Presque Isle City has a population of 1550, among them 76% are families. Homes varies to accommodate single family or multi- families, from quiet downtown to the Thunder Bay River, Canal, or lake shores. Some remind us proudly of times past, some are nestled in woods and tall trees, and many offer beach access with promises of magnificent sunsets. Quiet locations, close to services, attract many retirees as well.
And the low crime rate makes for safe living.
The children and young people of Presque Isle can make great use of the County’s Library which is praised for its dedication to facilitate education in the villages. The elementary school is a few miles away and Alpena offers a wide range of options within its excellent level of education.
The manufacting activites are mainly lumber and wood activities, followed closely by tourism with a high season starting in June and ending in September. Fish industry is big, and the Chinook salmon fishery ranks as the state’s best!
Presque Isle has kept witnesses to its past and its three lighthouses are an impressive reminder of the fist settlers life. The main one, built in 1840 and in operation until 1870, was fully automated in 1970 and is now a popular destination for visitors and localswho can participate in the summer festival. The Museum Presque Isle Wooden Boat Showalso offers visitors a unique reminder of the past craftsmanship of the people who lived there once.

Presque Isle is located in Presque Isle County, in the northeast corner of Michigan bordering the west south shore of Lake Huron with 70 miles of sandy beaches and coast.

TRANSPORTATION
US 23 links Presque Isle City to its neighboring town Rogers City to the north and to the thriving port of Alpena to the south.Five other highways, a truck line, two ports and the airport of Rogers City make Presque Isle fully accessible for recreation and business.
BRIEF HISTORY
Presque Isle (meaning “almost an island” in French) is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Early on, Indians and Frenchmen used the peninsula to avoid several miles of often wild open water.By 1830’s, naval commerce was growing and the harbor was an essential stop for refueling and replenishing supplies. By 1860 several cordwood business were established, boat landings, docks and a lighthouse were in full operation. The county’s boundaries were established in 1840 and its government put in place in 1871.
